(No Longer) Smells Like Teen Spirit

Smells Like Teen Spirit

If you were a kid in the 90s, you've almost certainly heard of the deodorant Teen Spirit.  Teen Spirit was first introduced in 1991 by Mennen, and then later acquired by Colgate-Palmolive. Teen Spirit became a favorite with teen girls due to the fun, flirty packaging and playful scents.

Teen Spirit also got a huge boost in popularity and awareness with the release of the Nirvana song "Smells Like Teen Spirit."  In fact, Teen Spirit was considered one of the most popular personal care brands in the US in the early 90s.  (Funny enough, it's said that when Kurt Cobain of Nirvana wrote the song "Smells Like Teen Spirit", he didn't actually know that Teen Spirit was a deodorant.)

So what happened to Teen Spirit? It's actually still around in limited scents. Though a bit harder to come by, Teen Spirit antiperspirant and deodorant can be found on walmart and kmart; however, it's not nearly as popular as it was in the 90s.

What did Teen Spirit deodorant get right? Teen Spirit made deodorant cool. Deodorant, often overlooked as a must have personal care item, much akin to toothpaste, became a desirable item. Teen Spirit improved the packaging, found unique scents that girls wanted to wear, and backed it with great advertising campaigns.

So, why isn't Teen Spirit popular today? Well, a couple of reasons. What was fun packaging on Teen Spirit in the 90s, now looks dated. The same goes for the scents - they don't align with today's modern teen. Most importantly, however, are the Teen Spirit ingredients. Teen Spirit is an antiperspirant, and we know that means it contains aluminum. Today's buyers - both moms and teens - are much more sophisticated and aware of products and ingredients. When it comes to our bodies, and especially young bodies of tweens and teens, we know we should be using only clean, natural ingredients we can trust, and staying away from things like aluminum, synthetics and other harsh chemicals found in Teen Spirit.

Not My Mama's, like Teen Spirit, thinks deodorant should be a fun, "want to have" item. If it's something you need to put on every day, you should enjoy it. That's why we created a deodorant that uses only natural ingredients you can trust, that comes in delicious unique scents and great playful packaging. At Not My Mama's, we make deodorants in scents girls love and look forward to collecting and putting on every day. We say, it no longer Smells Like Teen Spirit, it Smells Like a Day Dream, or Pool Party, or a Hang Out...
